Black Warrior Review


Established in 1974 by graduate students in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Alabama, Black Warrior Review publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction,and art by Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners alongside up-and-coming writers. Stories and poems appearing in Black Warrior Review have been reprinted in the Pushcart Prize series, Best American Short Stories, Best American Poetry, New Stories from the South, and other anthologies. Each issue features a chapbook from a nationally known poet.

BWR Fourth-Ever Fiction and Poetry Contest ($1,000.00)

Opens May 1, 2008. The Black Warrior Review will only consider previously unpublished work. Winners in each category receive publication and a $1,000 prize. All contestants will also receive a complimentary one-year subscription. That's a whole dollar cheaper than ordering by conventional means. It's a deal, it's a steal, it's the sale of the century! Finalists in each category will receive notation in the Spring 2008 issue and are also considered for publication. Each entry must include name, phone number, and email on cover sheet only, as well as SASE and reading fee. The Reading Fee is $15 per short story (up to 7500 words) and $15 per group of up to 3 poems. Make checks payable to The University of Alabama. Multiple entries are allowed.
